Aside from addressing the challenge of attaining stability in the supply of electricity in Mindanao, the power plant provides significant socioeconomic benefits to its host communities in terms of livelihood and employment. It also generates additional revenues to the government in the form of taxes and other fees. a. Social and Environment Programs SPI has developed a comprehensive community development and environment protection program to address the needs and concerns of its host communities. These programs include livelihood and income generation, health and nutrition, public education improvement and environment protection through reforestation, coastal resource management and environmental education and awareness. b. Share in the Electricity Sales SPI sets aside one-centavo per kilowatt hour of electricity sales to fund programs and projects along the areas of rural electrification, livelihood development, reforestation, watershed management, environment enhancement and health improvement. Proceeds of the one-centavo share are allocated to the host region, host province, host municipalities, host barangays and the relocation site. Program or projects are administered and implemented by the concerned local government entities and/or agencies of the national government. c. Information and Education Program SPI is implementing a comprehensive Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Program to inform communities about the power plant, its safety features and environmental protection and community development programs. The IEC program aims to develop a sense of community stakeholdership and to ensure wider community participation in efforts geared towards the attainment of sustainable development.
