Where will the company source the coal?
SPI will be using coal that is mined in Indonesia. It will be transported to Mindanao by sea-going vessel. This coal is of high quality and fully meets the performance and environmental requirements of the project and its international lenders. SPI is solely responsible for sourcing and purchasing the coal.
Where will the Power Plant draw water for its operations?
Raw water to be used as process water in the Power Plant will be drawn from the nearby Tagoloan River and pumped via underground pipeline some 5 kilometrs to the water treatment facility at the Plant.
Will the water level of the Tagoloan River be affected by the consumption of the Power Plant?
There will be no effect on the seasonal river level beacuse the volume of water to be extracted from the river is very low and represents only a fraction of the volume flow rate of the river. Water consumption is controlled by a permit of the National Water Resources Board (NWRB). Moreover, SPI has developed a comprehensive environment conservation program that will help maintain banks of the Tagoloan River
How is power generated from coal?
A. How is coal used? With delivery from Indonesia, coal is landed by handy-sized vessels via a special purpose jetty and stockpiled in a specially prepared coal storage area at the plant. Coal will be pulverized to fines and blown together with pre-heated combustion air to the boiler furnace, where it is combusted under controlled conditions, which regulate the combustion performance and minimize emissions in the ensuing flue-gas.B. How is water used?At the water treatment plant, the water is filtered and stored in the Clean Water Storage Tank. This clean water is further treated such that minerals are removed. The de-mineralized water is then fed as feed water to the boiler.
The heat generated through combustion is transferred via the boiler heating surfaces to the feed water for conversion to steam. With continuous heating at high temperature, the steam is pressurized. The so-called live steam is directed by high pressure piping to the steam turbine.
C. How is electric power generated? The high-pressure steam releases its energy through expansion across the blades of the turbine causing these to rotate a turbine rotor. This is directly coupled to the generator, which generates electricity through revolution.
D. How does the generated electricity reach our homes?Generated electricity from the unit transformers of the power plant is conveyed through a special purpose inter-connector to the TRANSCO substation in Tagoloan. From there, the electricity is distributed through TRANSCO’s 138-kilovolt high voltage grid to the electric power cooperatives and franchise distributors and consequently to the power consumers: the industries, commercial establishments, offices, and residential users.
